About the work

Boys’ Day Festival (Tango-No-Sekku)

Pray for the Success in Life for Boys” “Prayer for Boys’ successes”

During the Edo period, there was a custom among the samurai class to adorn the entrance to their houses for Tango-No-Sekku with a brocade and/or uma-jirsuhi (battle standard raised next to the horse of a commander) and war banners in praise of the battle braveries of their ancestors and to pray for their children’s success in life. When this custom trickled down to commoners, they raised carp streamers in place of battle standard and banners.
