Harper’s Bazaar is a fashion magazine first published in the United States in 1867, thus giving it a proud history as the world’s longest-running fashion magazine. Following the end of the Civil War, Harper’s Bazaar became a sort of fashion bible for American women who could finally afford fashionable things. Women who could be painted on ceramics came to be sought after by various businesses, such as the women featured in magazines. Until this time, except for portraits, passive poses were most commonly used for the women painted on ceramics, and all they could do was pose with musical instruments. However, from around this time, women engaged in various leisure activities like skiing began to appear, and this particular piece is known as Susie Skier.
