The term “silver glazing” is often seen in contrast to gold glazing; however, the color of pottery that has been decorated with silver may become dark with aging, regardless of whether OGATA Kōrin or Kanzan produced the masterpiece. In modern Japanese export, porcelains, generally called silver-glazed ware, include platinum, silver luster, or palladium glaze pieces. As these pieces feature palladium, they are glossy, have eye-catching coloring, and can stand up to aging much better than silver. The superb composition of these pieces may also be highly representative of the Art Deco period of modern Japan’s export porcelains.
