About the work
[Inscription] M-NIPPON Mark (Green)
[Year of Manufacture] 1911-1921 (approx.)
This vase features an enameled iris design. Ceramics made for export in modern Japan used overglaze and a variety of other techniques, such as Coralene, sharkskin, tapestry, and tree bark styles. However, it is infrequent to find a vase that is enameled in its entirety, as this piece is. The prominent irises positioned around the center are drawn in a highly original style. The design around the upper portion of the work features a style of orientalism that is highly evocative of ancient Egypt.
