The name Lady Godiva is said to have originated with a British countess of the 11th century. Legend has it that Lady Godiva repeatedly asked her husband to stop imposing such heavy taxes on the local citizenry. Her husband replied, “If you ride a horse completely naked around the city, then I’ll lower the taxes.” The following morning, she rode her horse around the city naked, while all the people closed their windows out of respect for her stature and her bravery. This plaque shows Lady Godiva with her hair waving in the wind as if riding her horse.
