About the work

[Inscription] U.S. Patent

[Year of Manufacture] The first half of 20th Century

The name ”Coralene” was created because of the textural resemblance of this type of porcelain’s beaded surfaces to that of coral. Coralene ware was produced for about ten years in Japan, starting in 1910. Most of the Coralene ware produced were large vases and jugs, while coffee cups, saucers, and plates made up only a tiny portion of the total output. These mainly were intended for decorative purposes, and there are no indications that they were ever used as tableware. One reason for this is undoubtedly the fragility of the glass beads used. It can be safely said that cups and saucers like the one shown here are extremely rare.
