About the work

[Inscription] Kinkōzan Royal Nippon

[Year of Manufacture and Artist’s Name] The first half of 20th Century Kinkōzan Sōbei

The name ”Coralene” was created because of the textural resemblance of this type of porcelain’s beaded surfaces to that of coral. Coralene ware was produced for about ten years in Japan, starting in 1910, and the American firm Vantine & Co. applied for patents on the technique in both Japan and the United States in 1907 and 1908. While many of these wares were produced by Van Tine, the vase shown here was made for export by Kyoto potter Kinkōzan Sōbei VII (1868 –1927). It is very rare to find such a large piece with such easily damaged beading still so well attached to the cream-colored base.
