About the work
[Inscription] Maple Leaf Mark
[Year of Manufacture] 1891 – 1915 (approx.)
This piece is thought to be based on a painting found in the design book kept by Noritake Co., Ltd. To educate workers in Japan on what sorts of designs were generally preferred in the United States, Morimura-gumi used this design book to suggest original compositions that could best conform with American tastes, sending it to the factory where the actual painting was performed. In the design book, a picture of a cattleya is painted with overglaze enamel. However, on this authentic piece, the flower is superbly finished using raised decoration. Moreover, the raised flower is conspicuously positioned in the center of the article, with leaves extending upward from below also featuring this raised design. This pitcher is a fine example of actual creative work that is more elaborate than that shown in the design book.
