SAKIORI | Michiko Arikawa & Yoko Inoue

About the Artist

About Exhibition

This collection introduces works by two artists, Sakiori artist Michiko Arikawa and bag designer Yoko Inoue, featuring "Sakiori," a traditional Japanese recycling technique dating back to the Edo period.

Sakiori is a technique in which kimonos and fabrics that have fulfilled their original purpose are torn into fine strips and woven as the weft. This recycling method was utilized during times when thread and cloth were precious. While cotton was primarily used in the past, modern Sakiori incorporates diverse materials such as Western clothing and hand towels (tenugui), resulting in free and highly unique designs. In addition to the Sakiori fabric itself, a variety of practical items are showcased, including bags, table centerpieces, and noren (fabric dividers). Every Sakiori piece made from recycled old cloth is completely unique, making each item a true one-of-a-kind work.
