About the work

About the artist Michio Namatame was born in 1957 into a family of painters. His great-grandfather, Shimei Nemoto, was a painter in the Edo period, and he became a painter himself. He has various awards and has been active as a painter vigorously, including holding solo exhibitions in NY. From 1996 to 2007, he had lived and painted at an elementary school which was discontinued in mountainous areas of Abukuma mountain range in Fukushima Prefecture and co-existed with nature. In 2007, he moved the atelier to Iwaki City's shoreline, facing the ocean, and started production activities. In the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, he also suffered a disaster, thinking about what he could do for an artist and recording this unprecedented earthquake disaster in his paintings. “An artist cuts off time, so I'd like to record the earthquake in my paintings as a lifelong work," Namatame says.
